Library Assistant – Youth Services

Library Assistant – Youth Services
(Term Position August 19, 2019 to December 31, 2020 – 16 months)

Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Librarian, the Library Assistant-Youth Services plans and delivers library services and programs for youth. This is a full-time temporary position (35 hours/week) which includes some evening and Saturday shifts. This a term position, from August 19, 2019 to December 31, 2020.

-Library Technician diploma (or an acceptable combination of education and work experience)
-Demonstrated enthusiasm for - and comfort with - working with youth.
-Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, communication, and teamwork skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, patiently, and courteously with people from a wide variety of cultural, social, and education backgrounds.
-Computer Experience in a Windows based environment.
-Ability to carry, push and pull heavy loads.
-Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and willingness to drive the library van.

Duties / Tasks
-In consultation with each branch, organizes programs of interest to children and young adults.
-Publicizes programs by posting on social media, creating signs and flyers, brochures, and contacting local schools and interest groups.
-Periodically visits branches to conduct programming.
-Creates resources for branch staff to use with children’s programming.
-Visits daycares, schools, community groups, etc. promoting library services.
-Works with summer staff to plan and promote summer reading programs for children and teens.
-Performs circulation desk duties, including registering and updating patron files, lending and receiving materials, answering telephone and directing calls, collecting fines, shelving, and shelf reading.
-May be asked to assist with interviewing, selecting and training summer staff.
-May be asked to assist with selecting library material for youth and de-selection of library material.
-May be assigned other duties and projects as required which may supersede regular tasks.

Salary: $17.31 per hour
Term: 16 month term with possibility for continuation based on funding.
Start date: August 19, 2019
